The Little Things...

Sometimes I forget that the title of this blog is The Adventurous Adventures of Kelli and Dave. I get wrapped up in my own stuff, my own life, that I forget to take notice of the everyday adventures that make up living in a country that is not your own. For example, on Sunday, Lindsay and I went shopping. I wanted a few things for the house- it's so giant that it still doesn't feel like a real home yet. There's a lot of space to fill. Anyway, we drove to the mall- Concepcion (con-sep-see-own). It was PACKED! Picture a mall parking lot, the day before Christmas when all the prices on everything have been reduced to $1.00. And picture the parking lot only having like ten spaces. Yes, it was that nuts.

So Lindsay and I drive around, feeling sure that there must be a parking garage somewhere but unable to find it. People were parked EVERYWHERE- in the most bizarre places. You could hardly drive around the parking lot because people were going up and down the wrong way in aisles, other people were waiting for people to leave... people who weren't even at their cars yet! Madness, I tell you.

Well, as we're about to give up, an old woman, Pizza Hut box in hand, gets into her car right in front of me. I pulled to the right, put my blinker on, and waited for her to pull out. As she starts to reverse, a guy in a small sedan tries to go around me on the left. He brakes quickly when he realizes someone is pulling out, and, knowing something dirty was about to happen, I started to bristle. Sure enough... that MAN (trying not to cuss in my blog), without even a sideways glance, PULLED INTO MY SPOT!!! I rolled down my window, used a cuss word to tell him what he was and where he could go, and drove quickly away, hoping he didn't speak English... or have a gun.

And wouldn't you know it- Karma smiled on us. We drove around the corner and someone pulled out of a spot- a Justin-Timberlake-spot (superstar parking) right in front of the front door! I did a happy little in-your-face dance towards the other parking spot, and went merrily on my way.

Now, you might be thinking- that's not really an adventure. It could've easily happened in any state in the U.S. But, it's never happened to me. And while I can picture a spot being taken in a parking lot, that was just unbelievably blatant.

Life in Guate. Le sigh. But I love it.
